The Global Corporate Challenge uses Macromedia Flash MX to deliver a Rich Internet Application allowing 15,000 participants to track their daily progress on a virtual journey around the globe. Their journey is measured by number of steps, which are tracked on pedometers worn by the participants.
The objectives were three-fold:
• develop an immersive and engaging user experience;
• increased participation of up to 500% (from 2004: 3,000 daily users to 15,000 daily users) and;
• ensure ease of use and be more creative and engaging than the previous Web site
The Solution
Reactive created a Rich Internet Application that delivers a sophisticated user experience for participants. The site provides a seamless experience, delivering dynamic map positioning, complex statistical data and team messaging features within a beautiful user interface.
The navigation allows users to easily switch between map, statistical and team content areas with ease.
Reactive built an ambitious, three level zoom-able map of the globe which required sophisticated use of Macromedia Flash, allowing us to enter the geo-codes of 122 world-wide locations and to dynamically transition and zoom between each location.
Reactive also needed to ensure that Flash and .NET were robustly integrated to allow hundreds of concurrent users. With even more user data being passed between the various systems, object oriented modeling was used, ensuring that when any modifications or extensions were required during production it could be easily implemented and tested.
The heart of the 2006 site is the world map, which allows teams to track their progress as they enter their daily step count. This innovative use of Flash enables users to zoom to three levels of detail, from global to country and then location. As each new milestone is reached, new content is unlocked revealing new images and data about the location. Detailed statistical information is shown in tabular and bar-graph format, allowing participants to cross-reference their performance with other teams within their company, as well as all teams competing in the challenge. The leader board displays a team's overall performance, and their shift in position from the previous week.
The Results
In the 2005 Global Corporate Challenge there were over 1,000 teams who walked in excess of 10 billion steps. In 2006 there was a 500% increase in participants from the 2004 event.
The GCC Medical Health Study (2004) demonstrated that more than one third of those sampled had at least one major risk factor for heart disease. Over the six months of the 2004 competition, GCC participants increased daily activity by 28 per cent every day.
This activity helped more than 50 per cent of those people with unhealthy levels of abdominal fat to shed 5 cm (men) and 8 cm (women). There were also significant improvements in blood cholesterol, blood glucose, weight and waist measurements.
In addition, the GCC Web site has been recognised in the following national and International awards:
• Finalist in MADC 2006 Awards (GCC 2005 site)
• Winner in 2006 AIMIA Awards (GCC 2005 site)
• Finalist in 2005 New York Festivals
• Macromedia Asia Pacific Showcase award (July 2005)
• Nominated as “Webby Worthy” in 2005 Webby Awards
• Finalist in 2005 AIMIA Awards (GCC 2004 site)
• Macromedia International Site of the day (GCC 2004 site)

"Reactive built a web site that far exceeded our original expectations. They are very skilled at what they do and offered invaluable insight into the development process. We look forward to working with them in the future and achieving goals that were once thought impossible."
Sarah Farley, General Manager, Global Corporate Challenge
"I just wanted to give you some positive feedback about the website. I think it's great - very easy to navigate and great use of comparison graphs and statistics. It's probably the most user-friendly and interesting website that I've visited. Keep up the great work!"
Kate Mildren, Ernst & Young (SA)
