The Official Highway Code is one of Britain's highest selling non-fiction titles. Reactive were commissioned to design and develop an interactive CD-Rom version of the publication, for sale in UK bookstores and TSO shops.
Strategy
The Stationary Office (TSO) was briefed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to transform The Highway Code from a printed publication into an interactive CD-Rom for all road users.
The CD-Rom outlines over 300 road rules, including new rules concerning the use of mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs. As such, a priority of the project was on accessibility and meeting WCAG guidelines.
The Solution
The CD-Rom needed to have an emphasis on a younger audience, teaching them the dangers of the road and road safety. The innovative and educational product includes:
- Interactive games and quizzes, such as a Stopping Speed game, Road Sign quiz and Sign Matcher
- Keyword search and indexes for fast finding of content
- Video and audio safety campaigns
- Audio voice-over for users who are visually impaired
- Designed to meet WCAG accessibility guidelines
The Highway Code CD-ROM was released in January 2008, and is available in stores nationwide.
